Bollywood movies that portrayed the life of a common man/middle class family effortlessly

Bollywood has come a long way from being centred around an affluent protagonist to talking about the common man and portraying their struggles on the silver screen. Over the years, a revolution that slice-of-life films brought to the screen is the treatment with which they approach this subject matter. We bring to you a list of such movies based on the lives of the simple, uncomplicated common middle-class family:

  1. Chak De India

A first of its kind, this sports movie is based on the life of a disgraced Indian hockey coach who trains and helps the women’s hockey team to bag a gold in the Commonwealth games. The movie is replete with women players coming from middle-class households such as that of the character of Vidya, who faces challenges head on. It was a hit amongst the masses.

  1. Dangal

Another coming of age sports movie that highlights and stresses upon the effect right parenting and a shift in perspective can bring. In this case how a common man from a very humble background, trains his daughters with so much grit and discipline. Championing womanhood and smashing stereotypes one scene at a time, this movie set the bar really high.

  1. Tumhari Sulu

A middle-class Indian homemaker achieves all her dreams and her life begins to drastically change. For the better or for the worse? You’ll have to watch to find out. It will leave you with a changed perspective towards Indian women.

  1. Piku

Another Bollywood movie which was both a critically acclaimed movie and a commercial success on its release, is the movie Piku. The movie throws light on the daughters of middle class households of modern India and how they are shouldering responsibilities in a greater if not equal measure and capacity than what is expected of them. With a stubborn, ailing father played by Amitabh Bachchan, Piku is an incredible blend of humour and sentiment.

  1. Dum Laga Ke Haisha

The movie which is based in the humble city of Haridwar is a blockbuster movie in its own right. Talking about the complex issues which plague society- women’s weight and health, dowry etc. the movie is a hilarious ride of common human emotions, love and laughter.

  1. Khosla Ka Ghosla

A hilarious comical satire based on the life of a common man enacted by the versatile Anupam Kher, the movie’s storyline revolves around a property he owns and the dispute that ensues regarding that.

  1. The Lunchbox

With the late Irrfan Khan in lead, the movie is a refreshing take on the lives of Indian homemakers and how society sees them. A story that begins with a mix-up in lunchboxes, sent through the intricate system of Mumbai dabbawalas, develops into a romance never-before-seen on the silver screen. Watch this one for maximum relatability and the simple yet profound and joyous moments.

  1. Vicky Donor

Another Ayushmann Khurrana starrer, this movie received quite the attention from audiences upon its release and left them wanting for more. The chemistry between Ayushmann and Yami Gautam Dhar can absolutely not be denied. Coming from a humble background, Vicky tries to gather funds to run his household and what he does to achieve that spurs quite a lot of commotion in his life.

  1. Sui Dhaga:

The story of a young entrepreneur whose life journey starts with trying to attain self-employment instead of working under a boss, Sui Dhaaga captures the middle-class struggle perfectly. The roles of Mauji and Mamta portrayed by Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma will have you rooting for them throughout.

  1. Do Dooni Chaar:

A teacher who makes a modest living is cornered by his children, who are growing up and want a car for the family. The sentimental and comical journey of purchasing their first car is what makes Do Dooni Chaar so special. If you have watched this movie, you would agree that the Alto scene was the one that took the cake.

Bollywood is true to its showing of middle class families and their simple yet significant lives that make an indelible impression on everyone’s minds. Watch some of these movies to relive the many relatable moments from your own life.
