Bollywood movies that are based on a book

When directors and their teams get into making a movie based on a book, there is an untold yet very evident comparison between how the story plays out in the piece of literature and the cinematography. Bollywood movies have often been about telling stories adapted from books, and some of them have been really good at doing it.


Let's take a look at some of our favourite movies that have been adapted from books:


  1. 7 Khoon Maaf

    With Priyanka Chopra in the lead role and an interesting plot full of twists, this movie is the story of a woman who murders all her husbands. It's based on a short story by the legendary writer Ruskin Bond, ‘Susanna’s Seven Husbands’.



  1. Aisha

    Based on Jane Austen’s classic novel - Emma, the movie is a sartorial take on the book, that talks about the do’s of love and friendship and most importantly the don'ts. The movie when released, was way ahead of its time and still captivates the audiences with its subtleties. 



  1. 3 Idiots

    The blockbuster and very popular adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel - ‘5 Point Someone’ (FPS) a very popular book with the Indian youth was a hilarious ride, showcasing the campus life and life-long camaraderie of three engineering graduates.



  1. Omkara

    Based on the iconic Shakespearean novel, ‘Othello’ the movie is a coming of age story, by the ace Vishal Bhardwaj. With a stellar cast of A-list Bollywood actors the film was very well received by the audience and won a lot of critical acclaim for the performances and direction.



  1. Parineeta

    A musical Bollywood adaptation of the novel Parineeta By Sarat Chandra. The movie delves into the relationship between two lovers who grow up together, only to be separated due to circumstances beyond their control. What unravels next is truly heart-touching.



  1. The Namesake

    An intense movie by Mira Nair, with Tabu and the late Irfan Khan in lead roles, the movie is an adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri’s book -The New Yorker.



  1. Haider

    Another adaptation of one of Bard’s novels - ‘Hamlet’. This movie is a wonderful take on the insurgency in Kashmir. Strong performances by Tabu and Shahid Kapoor raised the bar for Bollywood with this one.



  1. Two States

    This one made us go mast magan with its stunning visuals, screenplay and easy-going yet relatable storyline. The film stars Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles and you simply can't deny their cute chemistry throughout the movie.
