Evolution of the Saree in Bollywood Movies

Sarees form an integral part of Indian culture and thus, inevitably form an integral part of Hindi movies. From cotton and chiffon sarees pulled off by actresses in older films to silk ones seen in more recent films, the saree has truly had a journey like no other item of clothing. Read ahead to see the evolution of sarees in Bollywood movies.

Retro Era

Between the 1950s and the 1970s, Bollywood icons such as Madhubala and Nargis played a key role in popularising sarees with well-fitted blouses and petticoats. The classic drape involved draping the pallu over their heads, usually using luxurious fabrics like silk and chiffon, adorned with fancy embroidery and embellishments. This era was all about elegance and style, with a strong focus on traditional aesthetics.

The Age of Glamour

In the 1980s, Bollywood saree fashion was all about flashy glamour. Stars like Padmini Kohlapure and Rekha rocked those heavy silk sarees decked out with gold embroidery and zari work adding a touch of grandeur. They stuck to the traditional drape and made sarees a symbol of luxury.

Simple Elegance

During the 1990s, Bollywood saree fashion took a turn for simplicity and elegance, thanks to stars like Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor. They opted for sarees with minimal bling and designs and draped the pallu over their shoulders in a more modern way. It was all about celebrating grace and style during this period.

Modern Styles

In the early and mid-2000s, saree fashion underwent another change due to actresses like Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, and Kareena Kapoor. They gave a Western touch to the saree and made it look modern and cool. The style, in today’s times, has also become more minimalist as the sarees are simpler and are paired with less heavy jewellery.
